What do humans do? What is our purpose in life? To live, evolve, reproduce and learn. I guess its the same for hamsters… its us that put them in a cage and watch them run round a wheel… but hey they are cute.

They also supply nutrition for the comedian Freddie Starr (you may need to google this one) 😉

Sleep and Eat. Doesn’t sound so bad does it?

Richard has already given a very philosophical answer I see, and I’d agree. As biologists, we’d argue that the purpose of any creature is to survive and reproduce. As to what hamsters actually do, I agree with Craig. They eat, sleep, run around their little wheels and at night they make a racket climbing about in their cages and rattling the bars. At least that was my experience of having a hamster when I was younger. He was called Trevor!

My first hamster was called Emerson he was a lovely hamster however he had big teeth and used to bite me. I would hate to admit it but they come from what we class the rodent order or rodentia (not sure how to italic) all rodentia means is that the cute animals have two incisors (your front teeth) that continously grow this is why you should make sure your hammy has a wooden toy or dried sweetcorn to gnaw on or their teeth will overgrow and your hammy will be in pain. Back to the question, like us humans as Richard said they sleep, eat, drink, run around, reproduce and if you have made a little hamster maze they will also learn where the exit is (a bit like us in a hedge maze). I am guessing from the question you have a hamster, just make sure that your hamster is fed and watered, has enough space to run around and if you ever feel his/her tail feel damp then take him/her to a vet unless it is because he/she has got wet from the dripping water bottle. The reason I mention this is because if your hammy suffers from wet tail either by stress he/she can get sick. Syrian hamsters are most prone, unfortunately Emerson was a Syrian but fortunately was healthy when he passed on to hamster heaven.
