      I love being a scientist!

I always loved science at school because it explained how things work and I found that experiments demonstrating why a particular theory was true and that helped to show how something worked, were really exciting and clever.

When I first learnt about DNA I was hooked, and knew that that was the area of science that particularly interested me and in which I wanted to work. I’ve found that working in science, the more you investigate, the more specialized your knowledge becomes. It’s great being an expert in a particular area and being able to explain that to people who want to know about. That doesn’t stop me from being interested in other areas of science though.

I never really call myself a scientist…. but I love my job… so I guess the answer is yes.

Being able to help other people by solving crimes using science is very rewarding!

I love being a scientist and couldn’t imagine being anything else.

I had some brilliant chemistry teachers at school but wasn’t so keen on Biology – until I started my first job – studying whales and dolphins. I then realised that chemistry and biology were just names and that you needed to understand bits of both to know how to answer scientific questions in the real world.

I love figuring out how the machines i use work so i can fix them when they go wrong and get the best results from them when they are working. I love coming up with new ideas and better ways of doing experiments and really enjoy getting good results (sometimes I do!) or figuring out why things didn’t work when I thought that they would (this is an important thing in science as often things don’t work first time and you learn not to panic or blame yourself but you sit down calmly and work out how to find out why it didn’t work)

I love using my brain in different ways and learning new things from all the great people I meet in my job just like I am learning from my fellow scientists and students like you through these questions.

I first started learning about Chemistry because I was worried about the damage humans were doing to the environment – i never thought I would end up working as a forensic scientist but really enjoy the fact that I have and that I have had so many great experiences and know this will carry on throughout my life.

Do you think you would enjoy being a scientist and if so what do you think would be the best bit?

I love every aspect of science, it was my strongest subject at school and is one of the most fascinating and diverse subjects available. I love carrying out experiments and scientific research as you can come up with ideas not many people know about.

I think being a scientist is a frame of mind, and we are just lucky enough to get paid for doing what comes naturally, and what we love. Science is a way of approaching the world – analysing little everyday things, asking questions – why does that happen? how does it happen? why does something else not happen? etc. I don’t think it is something you can turn on or off, so it is a good thing we all love it!!
